Israeli Money - One Lavener Shekel: "Rabbi Maimon"
Oil on Canvas, 60” x 48”
I went to Israel when I was twenty-one years old. I learned what ancient meant. I met people living in a Biblical, yet modern desert. They were religious and cynical; fearless and conflicted, arrogant and humble. I saw its cities: Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa. I saw its Kibbutzim and its sea.
The painted lavender atoms imprison the man. His knowing eyes take me to an ancient reservoir. I am a time-traveler who has fallen into a portal that I created. I see a mirrored me: young, hopeful, questioning and not yet knowing each part of me is whole. |
